Women are diagnosed with Alzheimer's Dementia at double the rate of men. The reason for this phenomenon is not well-understood. Since women are traditionally the caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's and other dementias, and the rate of Alzheimer's is growing exponentially, this represents a profound public health crisis. Rotary International has partnered with Cure Alzheimer's Fund to study this issue. For more information: http://womenandalzheimers.org/ |

Our club recently learned more about this critical issue in order to help combat it. Human trafficking involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to exploit other person sexually or work-wise. One estimate suggests there are 20.9 million individuals involved worldwide and 200,000 in US. Causes include the exploiting of vulnerabilities -poverty, abuse, mental illness, drug and alcohol addiction. Sources of contact -city streets, truck stops, strip clubs, hotels and motels, residential brothels and escort services, as well as via the Internet. Many are runaways, abused youth; average age 12 to 14. How to help:

The Alzheimer's Dementia Rotarian Action Group (or ADRAG) is a collection of Rotarians and Rotaractors dedicated to supporting the family of Rotary and our communities face the challenge of dealing with family members and citizens that are afflicted with Alzheimer’s and/or dementia. See flyer link on this website for more information.
This challenge is very real. Some are calling it the “silver tsunami”—the wave of men and women living longer than previous generations. Yet our communities and nations are not ready to face the rising tide of those suffering from these diseases. Researchers predict that 6.7 million people in America alone will have Alzheimer’s alone. Today, one in eight older Americans have Alzheimer’s, and the risk of developing the brain disorder doubles every five years after age 65. The ADRAG was recently awarded a Rotary Foundation Grant, with matching funds from Cure Alzheimer's Fund (www.curealz.org). This is a terrific global grant project with Dr. Rudy Tanzi of Harvard and the Massachusetts General Hospital heading up the research to determine why more women have Alzheimer's than men. To learn more, visit us at: Please encourage your fellow Rotarians and clubs to join our efforts! Donations are welcomed at: |

Our club has recently become involved with an amazing organization, NuDay Syria. NuDay Syria supports and encourages women to develop social & business skills. These women and children have not only been displaced from their home and country, but their family nucleus has been destroyed, as they have lost their husbands and providers. Skills are taught such as knitting and other hands-on skills with the intention to support themselves, so that these women can become producers & providers. NuDay Syria employs people on the ground in Syria and Turkey to receive the vessels and deploy the contents to lesser known and smaller camps. In New Hampshire, Nadia has brought together caring, compassionate individuals all of whom recognize suffering and, under their watch, will not be bystanders to the brutality. The numbers are staggering. In 2016, the United Nations (UN) identified 13.5 million Syrians requiring humanitarian assistance, of which more than 6 million are internally displaced within Syria, and over 4.8 million are refugees outside of Syria. In January 2017, UNHCR (The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, also known as the UN Refugee Agency), counted 4,863,684 registered refugees. The death toll is approaching ½ million. NuDay Syria connects our lives with others out of compassion and the belief that we are of one world, and as Nadia states “one humanity.” Help in all its forms is needed. “The fact that you can only do a little is no excuse for doing nothing.” [John Le Carre] Please see more about this amazing organization in the Sun Chronicle http://www.thesunchronicle.com/news/local_news/syrian-refugee-aid-gets-boost-in-foxboro/article_77eca501-102e-5379-b86d-7706df1d777c.html |

As we have for many years the Foxboro Rotary Club is offering competitive scholarships designed to help Foxboro residents improve their well-being through directed post-secondary education. The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Any resident or person affiliated with the Foxboro community demonstrating the ideals of Rotary’s ‘Service Above Self’ and needing financial support is eligible for a Rotary Scholarship Grant for any approved course of study. No one can be unaware of the challenges faced by refugees from the conflict in Syria. Politics aside, many of these refugees escape with nothing left but what they can carry. Recently, one of our members, Jiri Love, facilitated a collection and donation effort which carried basic clothing and personal supplies to NuDay Syria - an organization in Nashua, N.H. that assembles, packages, and ships these goods to refugee camps around the Middle East that receive and care for these refugees. To learn more about this effort, go to: http://www.nudaysyria.net/ |

Juri Love has introduced us to a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to help families impacted by the Syrian crisis. The Club's goal is to collect items that can be sent to Syria through this organization. See the bottom of the email for items you can bring to the next meeting, April 6th. If you go to the website, http://www.nudaysyria.net, there is a TedX talk that the founder explains exactly their mission. It is compelling. Here is their mission: Mission NuDay Syria is a non-profit organization focused on bringing humanitarian aid inside Syria and to help displaced Syrians in the bordering areas around Syria. We focus on bringing housing and food to displaced families with single mothers or wounded family members. We are especially concerned with the lack of safe shelter and living for single mothers with daughters. NuDay Syria is also focused on individual displaced people’s quality of life and will facilitate educational and micro-financial opportunities in order to help ensure financial independence and a means for individuals to eventually be able to help others, both financially and motivationally. ITEMS TO BRING APRIL 6th Gently used and new items, food, and medical supplies and equipment. Examples of much needed items are clothes, coats, shoes, boots, new underwear and socks, female hygiene products, diapers, soap, powdered detergent, sleeping bags, blankets, soccer balls, stuffed animals, non-battery operated toys. Food items needed include rice, flour, cooking oil, sugar, cans or bags of tuna, food high in protein such as peanut butter or nutella, energy bars, protein drinks, powdered and liquid milk and *always* infant milk in any form. All food items must be unexpired and in non-breakable packaging. If you have any questions, please reach out to Juri. |

The Foxboro Rotary Club recently had guest speakers Steve and Jill Albright of Rhode Island, who did a presentation on Long-Term Youth Exchange. The Foxboro Rotary has participated in the past in this program and is considering starting it again in the near future. This program usually lasts for one year, during which time the student attends school and lives with families in a host country. To gain a greater understanding of the culture, he or she will live with at least two, preferable three, host families during their stay. To ensure the students' safety, the host Rotary club conscientiously screens and selects all host families. In turn, our local club reciprocates by hosting a student here for a year. For further information please visit www.exchangestudent.org or contact our Foxboro Rotary at www.foxbororotary.org.

Our club provided a donation to help establish a new classroom in Honduras. They reported that the students were grateful to start class in their brand new classroom. This program arranges for small class sizes because this is an integrated tutoring program for children who have been identified by their teachers as having learning needs, behavioral issues, or are simply struggling to keep up with the class. With this program, we are able to provide the individual attention these students need. Each month we have all the students together at once for a workshop. We also hold monthly workshops for the parents so that we can support them in supporting their children´s education. See photos below.

Our annual "We Survived the Holidays" party was held at Lew and Rem's on January 8. It was supposed to be held on January 7 but something about snow and closed roads seemed to deter some enthusiasm. But the party a day later met all expectations! Particularly the Yankee Swap, which was as vicious and brutal as usual, maybe even moreso. The Rotary motto of "Service Above Self" holds most of the time - but NOT on Yankee Swap night!

We are pleased to announce an exciting collaboration between Rotary International and Cure Alzheimer's Fund. The two organizations are working together to co-sponsor research into why women are at higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease than men - an underfunded yet vital area of investigation. This work will be carried out by Rudy Tanzi, Ph.D., at Massachusetts General Hospital.
We hope this will be the start of many collaborations with organizations working to eradicate diseases such as Alzheimer's on a global scale. We are especially excited about the content of this study, which promises to provide significant insight into Alzheimer's disease and get us closer to effective treatments for both men and women.

Rotary District 7950 Water Resource Activities are directed by the Pure Water Initiative Committee (see Committee site), a dedicated group of Rotarians who desire to provide Clean Water and provide hygene and sanitation training to people that do not have access to clean water now. This includes providing education in the use of the facilities that provide this Clean Water. Since Rotary year 2002 the Pure Water Initiative Committee (see History site) has dispensed over $100,000.00 for water projects to sites in Honduras, Cambodia, India, Peru and Haiti. Using the Rotary Foundation Matching Grant Programs has increased the "bang for the buck" by adding 50% or $0.50 for every $1.00 designated to an approve project.

Our club's work with local youth appeared in a recent issue of the Foxboro Reporter!
"The Foxboro Rotary group has been working with local youth for years by providing opportunities for young people to participate in the community, become more effective leaders and help those less fortunate.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a leadership development program. The club typically pays for several students each year to attend a weekend long workshop which includes presentations, activities, and workshops that cover a variety of topics, including: leadership fundamentals and ethics, communication skills, problem solving and conflict management and community and global citizenship. Foxboro also has a local Interact club which is for youth ages 12-18 who want to connect with others in their community or school. The Foxboro Interact club does several local service projects each year, like projects for seniors, fundraising for those less fortunate both locally and for those in other parts of the world. The club also sponsored a trip last year and will be doing it again this year for a week-long trip to an area to provide assistance at free health clinic in an underprivileged area. This year the clinic will be held in June in Mexico. This will be a valuable experience, in terms of exposure to a new culture and to give the students the opportunity to deliver direct services to the population of indigenous people in the area. Lew Gordon and Jim Goyea, two local Rotarians, are currently scouting out the project this week in Mexico. Financially, the club has provided scholarships each year to a handful of seniors going on to college, local credit fairs that educate youth about financial responsibility and in past years have also supported the senior night ensuring that our local youth are safe that evening. If you know of youths who would be interested in learning more, please contact Lew Gordon via the website foxbororotary.org." |

In the past month, scientists at Mass General, funded by the Cure Alzheimer's Fund, have discovered how to replicate the Alzheimer's mechanism in a petri dish. This represents a huge breakthrough in the field, as it will greatly increase the pace at which new medications can be tried. As reported in the New York Times:

Lew is organizing a trip for roughly 6 students to do service work at a free optical and dental clinic in Chihuahua, Mexico (about 200 miles due west of El Paso). The clinic has been in operation for about 30 years and has active support from the Houston Rotary Club. This will be a very valuable experience, in terms of exposure to a new culture and to give the students the opportunity to deliver direct services to the population of indigenous people in the area.
Students would be invited via a selection process, since, at the last Interact meeting, about 18 Interact members were interested. The trip would be scheduled for late June 2016, with Lew and Lourdes chaperoning. The club will pay for part of the students' costs.

Our Rotary club recently donated money to the newly formed Student Activities Club, which is part of a international organization called DECA . DECA is a student organization whose main focus is giving student the skills they need to become successful in a variety of business fields which include Marketing, Business Management, Finance and Hospitality & Tourism, just to name a few. The main vehicle which students learn the necessary leadership, communication and interpersonal skills is through student competitions. This past January our students competed for the first time. Foxboro High School had 11 students qualify to continue on to the next round of competitions, which will take place in Boston on March 10-12. Efforts to raise money so quickly have been challenging, and our donation will go a long way to a worthy cause. |

On the weekend of May 15-17 2015, students from all over Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island gathered for RYLA2015 - our most successful such event to date. This exciting event challenged over one-hundred and thirty 10th and 11th graders to push their personal boundaries and expand their leadership and teamwork skills though physical challenges and problem-solving activities. The students also planned and assembled more than 700 bundles of school supplies to send to children in Afghanistan. See photo in the RYLA 2015 album to see happy students!
More than two-thirds of the Rotary clubs in District 7950 either sent students or sponsored alternates from other clubs. Our club funded five students and one alternate to attend RYLA. These students represented Foxboro High School, Foxboro Regional Charter School, and the Norfolk County Agricultural High School. The weekend was a huge success and we look forward to even bigger and better next year!

In response to the rising prevalence of Alzheimer's Dementia, Rotary International will be joining forces with a dynamic organization, the Cure Alzheimer's Fund, to address this growing crisis. The Cure Alzheimer's Fund was launched by a group of venture capitalists in Massachusetts who were frustrated by the slow progress of research. They have funded cutting-edge studies in the hope of finding effective treatments and a cure. One-hundred percent of monies raised goes to research, and they have received the highest ratings on charity review websites. Karen is a Board member and welcomes your interest.

On April 2, our club hosted a special evening speaker's event to promote Alzheimer's Awareness. Mike Curren from Cure Alzheimer's Fund (http://curealz.org) spoke about the latest in Alzheimer's research and treatments. He also discussed the Alzheimer's/Dementia Rotarian Action Group (http://www.adrag.org), a Rotary International initiative to promote worldwide efforts to provide information, promote best practices, and elicit donations for research efforts. Attendees agreed that the presentation was extremely useful and gave us action steps to help our own health and spur global efforts.

Congratulations to the Foxboro Rotary 2014 Walk to End Alzheimer's, which raised more money than all other teams for the Pawtucket Rhode Island walk Another congratulations to Karen and Jake for being among the biggest individual fundraisers. Well done!
It was a beautiful day for the 3-mile walk in Slater Park, Pawtucket RI. Lew and Rem joined Karen and Jake, as well as Jake's brother John and sister-in-law Robin, as walkers and more club members and the club itself as donors. And of course, the leader of the pack was Zizou.
Thank you to all involved!

On a cold and snowy evening in early January 2015, Lew and Rem hosted what turned out to be a very fun and lively gathering. Particularly entertaining was the Yankee Swap. Who knew this generally mild-mannered nice group of individuals could suddenly become so cutthroat?
A grand time was had by all; thanks to our wonderful hosts!

We will be purchasing 15 pedicabs. Pedicabs are bicycles fitted with side cars used for public transportation, especially in areas not covered by buses or jeepneys and in remote areas. All pedicabs will be marked with the Rotary and Bicol logos. Pedicab recipients will remit a portion of their revenue to fund new pedicabs for distribution.

Valerie Perry (DG) and Jane Desberg (Asst. DG) visited our club on August 21 at the Renaissance Hotel in Foxboro. The Board met for about an hour and a half before the regular meeting to discuss our club's Planning Guide for Effective Rotary Clubs. It was a very productive meeting, with many good ideas shared. They then joined us for lunch at our regular club meeting. Valerie recounted her Rotary journey and where she sees the future of our District. We presented her with a flag at the end of the meeting.
She noted that the highest rating she could assign to a club was 5 stars and that our club should have earned six or more!

Our club held its final meeting of the year on June 24 at the Foxboro Country Club. This provided members an opportunity to reflect on all of the incredible work the club has done this year, both locally and internationally. We said goodbye to Lori as our president and thanked her for the incredible job she has done this past year, as well as our other Board members (Karen, Jim, and Ingrid). The gavel is now in Mike's very capable hands and we look forward to a fantastic year with his leadership. Here's to another good year! |

Last Saturday, on November 27, Joe F. met with Amy-Jo Silverman from the Rockland-Hanson
Rotary Club
to go over the grant application process in general, and to review a
specific project proposal
. The current goal of the project is to provide school materials to an elementary school in the Philippines. Collaborating on this grant submission with the Rockland-Hanson Rotary Club and the Naga City Rotary Club in the Philippines (as the host club) allowed us an opportunity to learn about working cooperatively with other Clubs to obtain District grant funding and to initiate an international project.
The proposal was due today (12/1/10), so Joe and Amy-Jo had to work quickly to complete the submission. Although we do yet know the results of our application, they appear to be promising. As there was no time to hold a Board meeting before the application deadline, Lew gave authority to commit our Club to a limited fiscal degree to the project. We look forward to the evolution of this exciting opportunity! |
